Consent would be implicit, since to die alone is to always be alone, and perhaps be damned to come back and haunt/snatch family members to be with you. The idea of consent, and written consent at that, is one of our modern, litigation-crazed western society.

AMEN to that, about keeping your license....it's a sad world indeed when that has to be our motivating factor. Getting our RN's is a hard-won journey, and the fact that our license can be easily questioned/limited/lost, not to mention the red tape and such the state pays for to do that.

@DAWG....If we'd done that a long time ago, there wouldn't be a fiscal cliff to fall off of! I agree with you completely, although the article makes me sad for all the children and families caught in this mess. Why do politicians have to "tack on" stuff like this?!

Unlike the writer who thinks that people have to be 'ignorant' or have info 'sink into their brains,' if one actually reads the articles, many callers are older folks for whom the internet is not a familiar tool, and most are anxious and need reassurance.

And these are all the reasons that we "practice" medicine.....not because of insurance companies, or lack of want to save....and yes, a bit of each of us dies too when we lose a patient. Many thanks to all who have spoken to this.
